Treatment Process Overview

The CyberKnife System enables same-day or multiple-day -
treatment processes providing the ultimate in clinical flexibility.

    Step 1 – Patient Consultation
  • Physician and patient meet to determine the CyberKnife System treatment objectives.
    Step 2 – Patient Preparation
  • CyberKnife is a completely frameless treatment system. When necessary, fiducials may be placed to further enhance the accuracy of extracranial treatments. A mask or a foam body cradle is made to help minimize movement during the treatment. The process is simple and painless.
    Step 3 – Image Acquisition
  • CT, PET, MR, and 3D Angio images can be quickly and easily acquired at the patient’s convenience.
  • Because no head frames are used, the images can be acquired days or weeks before treatment.

    Step 4 – Pre-Planning
  • CyRIS™ InView™ Image Fusion and Contouring Station is designed to streamline the pre-planning step of image preparation and tumor volume definition. This capability enables physicians to complete this process within minutes, either from the hospital or remotely from their private practice or clinic.
    Step 5 – Treatment Planning
  • Advanced conformal and inverse planning tools enable simple and complex treatment plans. CyRIS InView supports on-site and remote fusion of CT, PET, MR, and 3D Angio and provides intuitive dose-review capabilities.
    Step 6 – Treatment Delivery
  • The patient wears comfortable clothing and may bring a CD to listen to during treatment. During treatment the patient lies on a table while the robotic arm delivers the radiation from different positions around the patient. At various intervals, the robot stops and additional images are obtained, thereby allowing the Cyberknife to track and compensate for small amounts of patient movement and ensure the radiation is targeted directly at the tumor while avoiding critical structures.
  • The CyberKnife System is the only device available today that continuously monitors patient and target position, and automatically corrects for any motion throughout treatment. When combined with the Synchrony Respiratory Tracking System, the CyberKnife System stands alone as the world’s most innovative full-body stereotactic radiosurgery solution.
  • The entire process is painless and typically the patient can go home immediately upon completion and return to normal activities.
    Step 7 – Follow-Up
  • Follow-up imaging is generally performed to monitor the tumor’s progress.
